Defne Cemal is an Istanbul born artist who will receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University in the Spring of 2019. Her work explores how collective and political memory construct identity and vice versa. She deals with themes such as materiality, time, language and memory by rendering the texture of Istanbul into metaphors that explore a personal past and a political present.
